 WORKSHOPS | building with robots

WORKSHOP | brief

With designers seeking to push the limits of what is a possible using computational design, parametric modeling techniques, and real-time process feedback, industrial robotic tools have emerged as an ideal development platform to reconsider way of materializing digital complexity.
During the last decades, the accessibility of the technology to new users has increased dramatically, with many manufacturers adopting open standards for connectivity and programming. Designers have taken the flexible nature of industrial robotic technology as more than just an enabler of computationally derived formal complexity; instead they have leveraged it as an opportunity to reconsider the entire design-to-production chain toward mass customization, the use of new material, new process and toward the rise of new design opportunities.
This workshop will be the place to learn and discuss about robots in architecture and its possibilities to change actual production processes.
Participants will be introduced to generative design, digital crafting, coding, robotic simulation and will end with the manipulation of the actual robot present on site.

WORKSHOP | requirements

Participants are required to bring their own laptops with the following OS and software installed :

ALEXANDRE-DUBOR-small!

Alexandre Dubor

Architect, Researcher, IAAC

Alexandre Dubor (M) is an architect and researcher combining new technologies in an attempt to reinvent how we build and live in our cities. He holds a Master degree of Architecture & Engineering from EAVT & ENPC (France) and Master Degree of Architecture from IAAC (Spain), with a specialisation in robotic fabrication and large scale additive manufacturing (FabBot 3.0). He hold as well a French architectural licence (HMONP) and have worked in various architectural office from competition stage to delivery (Libeskind, Atenastudio, iDonati, AREP, Appareil) while exploring the potential of scripting and coding in a separate practice in the field of web design (Collectif277). Since 2012, he is part of the R+D department in IAAC and work at FabLab Barcelona as a Digital fabrication & robotic expert in various applied research and execution work. He is currently teaching Digital Fabrication in IAAC and external workshop around the world while taking part in international conferences on thematics linked to advanced manufacturing in architecture, art and design.

Sofoklis Giannakopoulos

Architect, Researcher, IAAC

Sofoklis Giannakopoulos is a Greek Architect. He holds a Bachelor of Arts from London, followed by a Master in Advanced Architecture in the field of “Fabrication Ecologies“ and a Open Fabrication Thesis in additive manufacture with natural materials supervised by Enrico Dini, both obtained at IAAC. He has experienced and worked in traditional carpentry for housing and restoration of sailing boats and motorbikes (restoring mechanical parts and not only). After his bachelor graduation he was worked in Athens in diverse architecture firms , where he was mainly involved in design for housing and creating concepts for public building complexes, participating and wining awards in Greek national architectural competitions. He has been involved to various design classes and lectures, giving drawing classes by mixing digital media and manual ways of drawing. He has experience with many digital fabrication tools as Kuka robots. Currently he is a member of the IAAC Fabrication Research Team, researching the fabrication of a large scale 3d printer while also developing a “new” natural and biodigretable printable material based on soil for big scale additive manufacturing.
