WORKSHOP | brief

Clothes can be considered as the very first form of mediators between body, space and events. Condensing in their aesthetics not only the evolution of its relation to the physical functions of the body (movement, protection, temperature regulation) but also the evolution of cultural expression precisely by exceeding the purely indexical performative relations. Designing not only for the needs but for the desires.

Computational couture looks at the creation of exclusive custom-fitted clothing (typical of haute couture) through the lens of a systemic approach, extending the sartorial techniques with 3D modeling and computation-based approaches developed in Rhinoceros and the visual programming environment Grasshopper.
Aim of the workshop is to exert, infuse and expand the sartorial sensibilities to body proportions and dress making into an algorithmic approach that loops through design and fabrication by means of laser cutting and 3d printing for the design and production of a garment.
Participants will be divided in teams focusing on specific aspects of the garment related to the production technique (laser cutting or 3D printing).


WORKSHOP | requirements

 

 

The workshop is open to all participants, no previous knowledge of Rhinoceros, Grasshopper or tailoring techniques is required (although an introductory knowledge is welcome). Participants should bring their own laptop with a pre-installed software. The software package needed has no additional cost for the participant (Rhino can be downloaded as evaluation version, Grasshopper and plugins are free). These softwares are subject to frequent updates, so a download link to the version used in the workshop will be sent to the participants a few days before the workshop.

Alessio Erioli is Engineer and Senior Researcher at Università di Bologna where he also teaches Architectural Design, MArch in Biodigital Architecture, PhD in Architectural Engineering, co-founder  and coder at Co-de-iT. He has been advisor of many Master Thesis in Engineering and Architecture; he has lectured and/or taught at (among others) IaaC (Barcelona), AA Visiting school in Paris and Dubai, Accademia Belle Arti Bologna, TU Innsbruck, KTH Stockholm, UNI Stuttgart, Universidad Iberoamericana (Mexico). His interests interweave teaching & design ecologies in Computational design, articulating complexity to trigger emergent potential. His recent interests regard the relations among matter and agency: Agent-Based modeling simulation of Complex Adaptive Systems in architecture coupled with form-finding strategies. He is also skilled in computational design & modeling on several platforms (Rhinoceros, Grasshopper, Processing, 3D Studio, Ecotect; scripting skills in C#, Python, RhinoScript).


Anastasia Pistofidou is a Greek Architect currently working at Fab Lab Barcelona/IAAC as the head of Advanced Manufacturing Office, specialising in hardware development, rapid prototyping and design to production. With an architecture degree from AUTH Aristotle University, Thessaloniki and a Master Degree from IAAC, (Fabbots 2011) she worked at Fab Lab Barcelona  applied digital fabrication technologies to projects of product design, architecture,furniture, interiors, installations, exhibitions and artistic creations. She developed a personal applied research line, Fab Textiles, on textiles,soft architectures and innovative materials. Experimenting with new materials and processes, combining digital fabrication techniques and crafts, her work is demonstrating how new technologies can shift the massive consumption of fast fashion to a customised, personal and local fabrication in education and every day life. She also forms part of FirstV1sion, as the chief of innovation, developing a wearable t-shirt for sports that integrates a camera with a HD transmission system.


Lidija Stanojcic started her path of study in fashion design in 2004 at the University of Design, Technology and Management of Belgrade. During her studies, she worked as a costume designer for the Serbian national television. After having achieved the first bachelor’s degree in fashion and textile in 2008, she decided to move to Italy to further her studies and experiences. In Italy, she achieved a second bachelor’s degree at the Academy of fine arts of Frosinone. She specializes in womenswear design to shortly become professor assistant of fashion design. Ending her studies in March 2011, she received the honor to tech in the same Academy, therefore, in October 2011 she started teaching Illustration and rendering of fashion and design as well as Representation of fashion projects. In 2011 she was awarded the prize of best student of the region, obtaining the opportunity to show her collection “The War” during the event of Roman fashion week “Alta Moda Roma”. The cultivated passion for costumes brought Lidija to work, as a costume designer, for different emerging theaters in Italy as well as for the Italian television “Sky”.
